A Tribute to Katharine Hepburn, "The Queen Of Hollywood", 1907-2003

She left us this year but not without leaving a firm and irrespressable spirit. She was dynamic, self confident, self affacing, genuine, strong and any other desciptive word that belongs to those great ones among us.
This page is dedicated to one of the world's greatest women.A woman I was blessed to meet. A Woman who is surely missed. A Woman who successfully challenged every decade of her life. I met Miss Hepburn in 1976 after one of her performances of A Matter of Gravity while it was playing in Toronto. My legs buckled as I approached and was nudged into asking her for an autograph. She smiled and declined but suggested that we come back the next day and that she'd give me an autograph. We went back after every performance after that with two pink carnations which she readily accepted after a few words of thanks and a scathing "You really shouldn't do this" that instead encouraged us. After a few performances and meetings with our pink carnations, she asked us if we wanted to see the show. We of course said yes and ended up sitting in the front row to watch her final performance. After that I wrote her on occassion until 1994 and she responded to every letter. I don't know why I stopped. I deeply regret it now. I do however, feel blessed to have touched her in some way. To have touched the stars and somehow to have been given a gift. A gift of humility, strength and simple kindness that will stay with me always.

She had more humility than any of us will ever be able to express, yet she was as strong as a "TREE" which she remarked about in an interview with Barbara Walters... "An Oak Tree"!

I met het in 1976

That was the short story, this is the long one.
A friend and myself went to see her in A MATTER OF GRAVITY which was playing at The Royal Alexander Theatre in Toronto. We sat in the back row of the second balcony...VERY HIGH UP! I swear we could touch the ceiling. After the show we were walking towards the streetcar stop and STOPPED! My friend said "Don't you realize who we just saw?" "We have to go back and see her come out of the Stage Door."

We hurried back to the theatre and to our delight she was there in a smallish crowd addressing her fans with a smile and thankyous. Suddenly I realized I'd been pushed within inches of her. She was now looking right at me, my knees buckled. All I could think of asking was could I have her autograph! I knew she didn't give autographs in those situations but thats all that came out of my Dry mouth. She graciously told us to leave the program with her driver and that she'd sign it and we could pick it up the next day.

We were flabergasted! Stunned! We just walked not really knowing where we were going...as 20 somethings a drink was in order. As we sat there we decided on a plan. Our plan was to go back with two pink carnations. One from each of us. The plan became even bigger. The Plan would be that we go back with two pink carnations after EVERY PERFORMANCE!
